Hello, everyone!

Today, I will start to explain WiFi. In this first article, I will explain basic information about this technology.

Today, one cannot imagine life without the use of smartphones, laptops, tablets, ... At work, at home, on the street, in squares, at airports, etc. there are wireless networks that allow us to use our favorite "toys" (smartphones, laptops, etc). Since 1990, many technologies and standards for wireless LANs have been developed. But one standard became the winner. It is IEEE 802.11, much better known as WiFi. Today, I will start the articles on WiFi.

Today, WiFi technology is highly developed. High data transfer speeds are enabled. Comparing this technology with many other wireless technologies, WiFi has higher or approximately the same data transfer speeds. Comparing wired technologies (xDSL, LAN, etc), WiFi also enables high speeds, but the main thing is that it allows connecting hosts without cables. Today, it is very important.

However, there are also disadvantages to wired technologies: coverage and power of the signal. Numerous obstacles and other wireless devices interfere with WiFi technology. Also, security is very important. This is one of the main problems with this technology. But WiFi technology is still evolving and offering better service.

In the next table, we can see the evolution of WiFi standards. For all of these standards, I will talk about in the next articles. Generally, today we use usually WiFi 4, and new devices support WiFi 5 and WiFi 6. From the first speed of 54 Mbps (IEEE 802.11a) to 9.6 Gbps (IEEE 802.11 ax). And that's not the end. WiFi 7 is being developed.

Figure 2. shows us the evolution of WiFi technology and applications. Devices that support IEEE 802.11 are compatible with previous versions of the standard.

I will continue to write about this theme in the next article >> WiFi (2): Basic working principles.

Thank you!
