After PIM is enabled and a static multicast group is configured, the device creates a forwarding entry with the downstream interface specified; however, after a PIM Hello message is sent to this interface, the downstream interface of the forwarding entry is deleted.
The source address filled in the PIM Hello message is higher than the address of the interface functioning as the DR, or the value of the DR priority field of the PIM Hello message is larger than the value of the interface functioning as the DR. As a result, the interface can no longer function as the DR after receiving the PIM Hello message. In case that Assert election is not performed, the DR on the shared network segment is responsible for forwarding multicast packets. Therefore, the device considers that the new DR is to be used for multicast forwarding and then prunes the downstream interface.
