PPP has to go through the following phases before it enters the Line Protocol Up phase from the Physical Up phase:
LCP negotiation, during which the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU), magic number, authentication mode, and asynchronous character mapping are negotiated
Authentication in either CHAP or PAP mode
Network layer negotiation including IPCP and IPXCP
A negotiation failure at any phase will terminate link establishment.
