The virtual checkpoint is compared with physical checkpoint.  

The physical checkpoint is cameras installed at entrances and exits of highways, toll stations, and urban roads to capture passing vehicles and license plates. Generally, one intersection has one or more cameras. In addition, strobe lights and flashlights are usually used together. The strobe light is used to supplement light at night, and the flashlight is used to supplement light for snapshot taking.  

The virtual checkpoint simulates a common camera as a virtual checkpoint to recognize license plates. 

Advantage

 Low cost and wide surveillance scope. 

Disadvantage

The recognition accuracy is lower than that of physical checkpoint.

Can virtual checkpoint replace physical checkpoint?  

The license plate recognition function of the VCM is implemented through virtual checkpoint. Common surveillance cameras are used as virtual checkpoint. No dedicated design is provided for license plate recognition on the hardware and auxiliary devices. Therefore, high requirements are imposed on the installation of cameras. The recognized vehicle speed range is limited, and the recognition rate varies greatly in different environments. Virtual checkpoint cannot replace physical checkpoint. They can only be used as a supplement to physical checkpoint.
