Unequal-Cost Multiple Path (UCMP) allows traffic to be distributed among equal-cost paths to a specified destination based on the bandwidths of paths. In this manner, all paths bear different amounts of traffic based on their bandwidth to achieve proper load balancing.

UCMP can be implemented among paths only after all outbound interfaces of equal-cost routes on a device are enabled with UCMP and FIB entries re-delivery is triggered again. If one of the outbound interfaces is not enabled with UCMP, UCMP is performed among paths, even though FIB entry re-delivery is triggered.

UCMP applies to only equal-cost routes. It is independent of routing protocols. That is, it does not concern whether the Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) or the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is used.
