Optical networks are also called transmission networks. As its name implies, it is used to transmit signals of the upper layer network; it is mainly responsible for the end-to-end transmission of client-side signals. It is only responsible for the adaptation, transmission, and supervision of client-side signals, and does not change any information of the client-side signals. The network is transparent.
Optical network products are very rich. Huawei has classified the following types of products into the optical network product line: SDH equipment (main products are OSN1500, 2500, 3500, 7500), WDM products (main products are OSN1800, OSN3800, OSN9800).

The basic topology of optical network networking includes ring networks and chain networks, which are mainly determined by the distribution of physical optical cables. Generally, the backbone layer and the convergence layer are concentrated in large cities, and optical cable resources are abundant, and they will form a ring network. The access layer is generally in the wild countryside, and the optical cable resources are insufficient, and sometimes a chain network is formed. A ring network is more secure than a chain network, so it is recommended.
Optical network protection is divided into device-level protection and network-level protection. Device-level protection is mainly for 1 + 1 thermal protection of device boards, while network-level protection is mainly for protection against optical cable interruption.
