What is the difference between WDS and Mesh?

The fundamental difference between the MESH network and the WDS is the automatic discovery and configuration mechanism of Mesh routers. It also makes Mesh routers more reliable and more fault-tolerant. If the current link of the Mesh router fails, the MESH network will try to find alternative paths. In contrast, if the WDS link fails, no failover mechanism is provided.

MESH NETWORK TOPOLOGY

- There are Multiple backhal path (multiple route with backups)
- AP types (MPP - MP- MAP)
  MPP: Wired connected gateway AP
  MAP : Access User Connected APs
  MP : Center AP connected between MAP and MP
- You need to create a wired-port-profie for MPP AP

- 5 GHz could be used for wireless connection between APs

- 2.4 GHz could be used for wireless connection of STAs

- 2 Types of route advertisement method :pro-active & on-demand
- You need to create a mesh-whitelist profile

WIDS NETWORK TOPOLOGY

-There is only one backhul route for each AP

-AP Types (Root - Middle - Leaf)

 Root : Wired connected Gateway AP

 Leaf  : STA access AP

 Middle : Center AP between these 2 APs

-5 GHz could be used for wireless connection between APs

-2.4 GHz could be used for wireless connection of STAs

-You need to create wds-whitelist profile

-There is no backup data

A mesh network is more dynamic than what typical WDS functionality can provide. Mesh nodes typically support multiple wireless hops before reaching a node that's wired into the network, whereas an AP with WDS might only be able to wirelessly connect to another AP wired onto the network.
