What is the definition of a Southbound and Northbound device and what are these devices?

Hi, what does Huawei mean by Southbound and Northbound devices and what are these devices? 

I read it in the document "Distributed PV Plants Connecting to NetEco 1000S Smart PV Management System User Manual (Commercial Inverters + SmartLogger1000A)" but couldn't find the definition to understand exactly how Huawei differentiates between the two.

A northbound port connects to an upstream NMS for uploading data.
− RS485
 Supports six RS485 routes and access of devices that use Modbus-RTU,
IEC103, and DL/T645.
 RS485 supports the modbus-slave mode. If RS485 is set to Modbus-Slave, the
SmartLogger works in slave mode and can interwork with a third-party device,
such as a data collector and a communication manager.
Ethernet electrical port used as northbound ports to connect to an NMS.

A southbound port connects to a downstream device for collecting data and setting parameters.
 Southbound devices include the SUN2000, environmental monitoring instrument (EMI), power
meter, box-type transformer, and PID module.
 A northbound port connects to an upstream NMS for uploading data.

  • IF1: This interface is a southbound interface for connecting devices to eSight so that eSight can manage these devices. eSight supports the following types of southbound interfaces: SNMP, Telnet/STelnet, FTP/SFTP/FTPS, TR069, Huawei Man-Machine Language (MML), HTTPS, IPMI, SMI-S, and so on.
  • IF2: This interface is a northbound interface for integrating eSight with upper-layer management systems. The upper-layer OSS or third-party system can obtain resources, alarms, and performance data managed by eSight through the SNMP, HTTP, or FTP interface. eSight can interconnect with the Syslog server to forward eSight logs to the Syslog server.

The following uses the SmartLogger as an example:
SmartLogger as the center,Access inverters and neteco1000S
Access SmartLogger management devices, such as inverters or EMI,they are Southbound.
Access neteco1000S management devices such as SmartLoggers they are Northbound.
