The spatial hole-burning effect is when you have a spatial region along your laser cavity in which the optical field is higher than elsewhere - for example due to an optical standing-wave. At the peaks of this standing wave, carriers will be depleted faster than elsewhere, so you end up with periodic regions of lower gain.
