Hello, guys!

It is nice to meet you in the community!

Today I will share with you the PoE, including what is PoE, how to determine whether the device supports PoE, and how to calculate maximum number of the connected PoE devices.

What is PoE?

PoE, the full name is Power Over Ethernet.

PoE is a technology that provides DC power supply for terminals while transmits data signals without changing the existing Ethernet Cat.5 cabling infrastructure. In short, power is supplied through network cables, and no separate power cable is required.

The PoE power supply system consists of two types of devices:

Power supply device: a device that supplies power to other devices, such as a PoE switch or a PoE NVR800.

Powered device: a device that receives power, such as a PoE camera.

Standard of PoE, PoE+, and PoE++

Category

PoE

PoE+

UPoE+(PoE++)

Standard protocol

802.3af

802.3at

802.3bt

Power supply distance

100m

100m

100m

Maximum current

350mA

720mA

960mA

Input voltage of the powered terminal device

36~57V DC

42.5~57V DC

42.5~57V DC

Maximum power of a powered terminal device

12.95W

25.5W

81.6W

The NVR800 supports the EPoE compatible mode. The power supply can reach 200 m by reducing the network cable transmission efficiency (from 100 Mbit/s to 10 Mbit/s). In this scenario, only the bit rate lower than 1080p is supported.

Power supply mode

PoE power supply is available in two modes:

POE

  • 1236 transmits data and supplies power.

  • 1236 transmits data and 4578 supplies power.

The actual power supply mode depends on the PoE switch. The two power supply modes are compatible with cameras that support PoE.

Category 5 cables are commonly used for data transmission. Category 6 cables are better than category 5 cables in terms of material, transmission performance, and stability.

How to check whether the camera supports PoE?

  • Query the datasheet

Log in to the HoloSens information platform, view the camera details page, choose Technical Specifications > General Specifications > Power Type, and check whether the item supports PoE.

  • Query the camera body

If the camera body contains the PoE parameter information, the PoE function is supported.

Does the NVR support PoE?

The following model support PoE: NVR800-A01-04P, NVR800-A02-08P, NVR800-A02-16P, and NVR800-B04-16P.

How many cameras can be connected to a switch?

Access Requirements

Power of a single network port  > Camera power

Total PoE power  > Total camera power.
