What is OM?

Investigation of the concept of Optical Mode in Multi Mode optical fibers

It may have occurred to you that when preparing fiber optic cables, you have encountered all kinds of them, and choosing the right type of cable with your own network infrastructure is a little confusing for you, I want to make one of the factors on the cable box Written under the name of OM, I will explain its types and differences to you, and in the following articles, I will try to explain other factors in a simple language, away from technical and specialized discussions, that will help you in preparing this type of cables.

The first point is that you will see the word OM in Multi-mode cables, which stands for "Optical Mode", which is specified by the ISO / IEC 11801 standard.

The second point is the division of fiber cables based on bandwidth and maximum distance of cables as two main factors that divide cables into four categories OM1, OM2, OM3 and OM4.

OM1: This type of cable is generally orange in color and its CORE size is 62.5 micrometers, it is mainly used in Fast Ethernet networks and is used in 10 Gigabit networks up to a distance of 33 meters.

OM2: This type of cable is usually orange and its CORE size is 50 micrometers, the cable length in the 10 Gigabit network has increased to 83 meters, but this type of cable is generally used in 1 Gigabit networks.

OM3: The color of this type of cable is blue and their other CORE is like OM2, which have been amplified due to the use of laser technology to be able to travel longer distances in 10 Gigabit networks due to increased performance, support for speeds. It also has 40 and 100 Gbps, but is generally used in 10 Gigabit networks.

OM4: All the features of this cable are like OM3, with the difference that its capabilities have increased and this type of cable can be used for longer distances.

The Newest one:

OM5: The latest type of standard is introduced, which is green and is defined for 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit networks and can be used for longer distances than OM4.

Thank you.
