IP over DWDM (IPoDWDM) is a telecommunications network technology that allows IP routers and network switches in the OTN to communicate with one other (Optical Transport Network). Only when IP Routers and Switches support ITU-T G.709 is a real IPoDWDM solution built.
In this method, IP devices may monitor the optical link and provide transport capabilities as defined by ITU T G.709/Y.1331 FEC (Forward Error Correction). or the ITU-T G.975.1 Super FEC capabilities.

This method saves network components such as shelves, CPUs, and interface cards, lowering power consumption, OPEX (operational expenditure), and CAPEX (capital cost) (capital expenditure). This method further simplifies the network by obviating the need for the SDH/SONET intermediary layer.
IPoDWDM reduces CapEx by integrating the optics and the ROADM into a single interface.
