Hi!

Can an expert help with explaining ERPS? Or at least tell me where I can find any related documentation?

Thanks

Hey there!

ERPS is based on the automatic protection switching (APS) protocol and protection switching mechanisms. ERPS is applicable to Ethernet ring topologies at Ethernet Layer 2 and provides protection for LAN services on Ethernet ring networks.

If an Ethernet ring network is configured with ERPS, the RPL owner node blocks its port on one side so that services are transmitted only through its port on the other side. This can prevent service loops. When a ring link fails or an NE becomes faulty, the RPL owner node unblocks the RPL port. Then, services are transmitted through the RPL port.

ERPS is the simplest  protocol to configure and highly efficient in term of protection switching ( only 50ms).

Its very popular among network engineers for its simple configuration

In a ring diagram of L2 services/switches, a unique control vlan is configured and one of the switch is configured as rpl owner who function equivalent to root bridge in STP.

The control vlan periodically check the loop path. If he can rotate  the circular path, rpl owner block one port logically ; thus prevent loop

So many vlan can be configured but only one rpls instance can prevent loop for all vlans
