What is ATM or asynchronous mode of transport

There are many communication techniques used in many areas, one of which is the non-simultaneous transport method, for which we will try to provide a simplified explanation of its principle of action.

ATM definition

ATM is an abbreviation of Asynchronous Transfer Mode, which means asynchronous transportation method, a custom communications switching technology that regulates digital data from 53-byte cell units and sends them through physical media using digital signal technology, and at the individual level, the cell is treated simultaneously with other relevant cells, and then described before doubling its transmission through transmission.

Because atm is designed for devices to implement easily (more than software), it is possible to get greater switching and processing speeds.

Pre-set bit rates are either 155,520 Mbps or 622,080 Mbps, speeds in ATM networks may reach 10 GBps, sonet and many other technologies, and ATM is a key component of isdn broadband.

ATM Mechanism of Action

Atm is different from other known data link technologies such as ethernet in multiple ways, the first of which is its use of zero routing, instead of using a software that creates custom devices known as ATM switches that connect from point to point between endpoints and data flows directly from source to destination.

In addition, instead of using variable-length packages as IP and Ethernet do, ATM uses fixed-sized cells to encrypt data and these cells are 53 bytes in length, including 48 bytes of data and 5 bytes of raw information.

Each cell is treated at a specific time, and when completed, this procedure calls for the next cell to be treated and is therefore called asynchronous, as two cells are not treated at the same time.

The service provider can set up the connection in advance to create a custom circuit, be ready on request, and then end when it is finished.

Without the use of guidance and fixed-sized cells, networks can easily manage bandwidth by relying more on ATM than other technologies such as ethernet, and the high cost of ethernet-related ATM is one of the factors limiting their reliance on core and high-performance networks as well as dedicated networks.

ATM wireless atm mode

Wireless networks based on this technology are called ATM wireless networks, and this type of network is designed to provide high-speed mobile communications.

Similar to other wireless technologies, ATM cells are transmitted from the base station and transferred to mobile parties where the ATM switch performs mobility functions.

Non-synchronised mode of voice transmission

Another data protocol that sends audio, video and data packages through the ATM network is called VoATM, which is somewhat similar to VoIP but does not use IP protocol and is highly expensive.

ATM bit rate options

ATM services generally include four different bit rate options:

Possible bit rate or mawafer

Secure minimum capacity, but data can rush to higher capacities when network activity is at its lowest level.

Fixed bit rate

Determines a fixed bit rate and thus sends data according to a constant flow.

Unspecified bit rate

No production level is guaranteed and used for applications such as the delay-borne file transfer application.

Variable bit rate

Provides a specific transfer rate, but does not send data regularly, which has made it the most commonly used option for audio and video conferencing

Thank you.
