    Common Causes
A ping failure is commonly caused by the following:

  • A route is unreachable.
  • An interface on the intermediate      link is blocked.
  • The device receives ARP attack      packets or other attack packets.
  • An incorrect static route or      static ARP entry is configured.
  • An IP address conflict occurs.
Troubleshooting Flowchart
To rectify the fault, follow the troubleshoot flowchart shown in the following figure to rectify the fault.

What Can I Do When A Ping Failure Occurs?-2669229-1

Troubleshooting Procedure
1. Check whether the route is reachable.
  a. Run the display ip routing-table command in the system view of the device to check whether a reachable route exists.

  • If so, go to step 1.b.
  •  If not, check whether the route configuration is correct.
  b. Check whether the two devices are on the same network segment.

  • If so, go to step 1.c.
  • If not, ping the next-hop network segment hop by hop, find out the network segment that cannot be pinged, and go to step 1.c.
  c. Check ARP entries on the local device.Run the display arp command in the system view of the device to check whether the corresponding ARP entry exists.
     1) If the learned ARP entry is incorrect:
o    Run the display stp brief command to check whether an interface is blocked.
o    Run the display arp command to check whether an incorrect static ARP entry with a higher priority is configured.
o    Run the display cpu-defend statistics all command to check whether the device receives a large number of ARP attack packets or other attack packets.
o    Check the device configuration to determine whether an IP address conflict occurs or the forward and reverse paths are inconsistent.
      2) If the learned ARP entry is correct, go to step 1.d.
    d. Check ARP entries on the peer device.Run the display arp command in the system view of the device to check whether the corresponding ARP entry exists.
  2) If the learned ARP entry is correct, go to step 2.
  2. Collect the following information and contact technical support personnel.

  • Results of the preceding troubleshooting procedure.
  • Configuration file, logs, and alarms of the device.
