Dear Friends

I’d like to share with you my article includes below headers

1-     What do RAN , Physical layer and Logical Layer mean ?

2-     What are eGBTS , GBTS , NodeB,eNodeB and gNodeB ?

3-     Network Architecture of Base Station at RAN Layers.

4-     Base Station Mapping between RAN Layers.

5-     Reference of my article

What do RAN , Physical layer and Logical Layer mean ?

RAN : Radio Access Network and consists of two layes ( Logical and Physical )

Physical Layer : Consistes of Base Transceiver Station device “ BTS “ and Base Station Controller “ BSC “ and they are communicating togther through Transport Network

BTS Node <>  Transport Network  <>  BSC Node

Logical  Layer : Consistes of Base Transceiver Station “ BTS “  implemented device include eGBTS , GBTS , NodeB,eNodeB and gNodeB and Base Station Controller “ BSC “ and they are communicating togther through interface Protocol

GBTS , eGBTS , NodeB, eNodeB and gNodeB <>  interface Protocol  <>  BSC Node / RNC Node

1122

The RAN logical layer is classified into the 5G RAN, GBSS, UTRAN and E-UTRAN according to protocols used by each network.

Logical functions of base station controllers include GBSC

GBSS : GSM base station system,

UTRAN : Universal terrestrial radio access network,

E-UTRAN : Evolved universal terrestrial radio access network.

What are eGBTS , GBTS , NodeB,eNodeB and gNodeB ?

2233

GBTS : Means That BTS works with 2G band

eGBTS : Means That BTS 4G works with 2G Band

NodeB : Means That BTS works with 3G band

eNodeB : Means That BTS works with 4G band

gNodeB: Means That BTS works with 5G band

BTS : The Cabinet sometimes includes more than BBU Module at the same time , Perhaps for 2G Only or 3G or 4G or 5G or Both

G : GSM Band and e : LTE Band and g: 5G band

GSM : Global system for mobile communications

LTE : Long Term Evolution

MS : Mobile Station / UE : User equipment

BTS Node : A physical Base Transceiver Station and includes radio equipment and antenna system to provide GBTS Service

BSC Node : A physical Base Station Controller which provides GBSC Service

Transport Network : A Communication Channel among BTS , BSC and S-GW / MME / EPC / 5GC

S-GW : Service Gateway

MME : Mobility Management entity

EPC : Evolved Packet Core

5GC : 5G Core Network

GBSS : GSM Base Station System and consists of GBTS and GBSC

GBSC : provides functions of Radio resource management , BTS Management ,Mobility management and access Control

Um:  Unacknowledged mode is the interface between GBTS and Mobile station / User equipment

5566

Abis : The interface between the GBTS and GBSC

6677

Iur-g : the interface between two GBSCs and g means 2G

Iur : the interface between two RNCs

UTRAN : Universal terrestrial radio access network and includes NodeB “ 3G “ and RNC

RNC : Radio network Contoller and gives function include radio Channel Management ,Physical layer protocol processing and Signaling Procedure Processing .

Iub: The interface between NodeB and RNC

Uu: The interface between NodeB and User equipment / Mobile Station

E-UTRAN : Evolved universal terrestrial radio access network and includes the eNodeBs and performs functions radio resource management, radio channel management, mobility management, physical layer protocol processing, signaling procedure processing, and access control.

8899

X2The Signaling interface between two eNodeBs

S1: The interface between eNodeB and EPC

EPC: Evolved Packet Core

S1-U : An interface between the eNodeB and the S-GW for transfer of user data packets

22333

X2 : interface between the eNodeB and the gNodeB and includes Control plane (X2-C) and User plane (X2-U) interfaces

X2-C and X2-U transfer data between eNodeB and gNodeB respectively

The X2-C is based on the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP)

The X2-U is based on the GPRS Tunneling Protocol-User Plane (GTP-U)
