Hello
everyone!
Today, I will continue to explain the types and attributes of VLANs in the access network. In previous articles, I explained the basics of VLANs and in the previous article VLANs in the access network, I explained standard and smart VLANs. Now, I will show MUX and super VLAN, and after that, I will shortly explain the attributes of VLANs.
MUX VLAN
This type of VLAN contains two types of ports: upstream port and downstream or service ports. The MUX VLAN contains multiple upstream ports and one service port.
In this type of VLAN, communication between upstream ports and upstream ports and service ports is enabled. Only service virtual ports from different VLANs can not communicate with each other on the L2.

Figure 1. MUX VLAN
Super VLAN
Super VLAN is an L3 VLAN. This type of VLAN has a target to save IP addresses. The services from different sub-VLANs can be forwarded at L3. Sub-VLANs, in this type of VLAN, are isolated but they can communicate over ARP proxy. Sub-VLANs are smart or MUX VLAN. The attributes can not be a selective QinQ or a stack VLAN.
As I said in the last article about this theme, VLAN has three attributes:
Common
Stacking
QinQ
Now,
I will start shortly explain all of these articles.
Common VLAN
This is the default attribute of VLAN. This type of attribute, we can use when the OLT has one VLAN for upstream transmission. Common VLAN can be standard, smart, or MUX VLAN.
Stacking VLAN
TheEthernet frames can be with double VLAN tags – inner VLAN and outer VLAN. The OLT assigns inner and outer VLAN. Users of different ISPs have different outer VLAN tags. Devices on the MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) send packets of these ISPs based on outer VLAN tags. VLAN with this attribute can be smart or MUX VLAN.
QinQ VLAN

Figure 2. Example of QinQ VLAN Application
With this attribute VLAN, the ethernet frames have double VLAN tags – inner VLAN and outer VLAN. Inner VLAN is VLAN from the user`s local network, and outer VLAN is VLAN from the OLT. Network devices from core network forward packet based on the VLAN tag – outer VLAN tag. We can use QinQ VLANs for private line service. The example of this attribute is shown in the next figure.
