Question 1. What should I do if I forget the password? ![]()
? If you have not changed the default password of the switch, find the default password in the preceding table.
? If you have changed the default password of the switch or no default password is configured on the switch, you can restore the password in different methods based on the login mode.
The operation interfaces of switches may be different.
1. Restoring the Password for Login Through the Console Port
Method 1: Log in to the switch using Telnet and change the password for login through the console port.
If you have a Telnet account and user rights of an administrator, log in to the switch using Telnet, change the password for login through the console port, and save the configuration.
Step 1. Log in to the switch via a Telnet account.
Step 2. Change the password for login through the console port.
For example, the password authentication is configured and the password is H*****@***.
<HUAWEI> system-view
[HUAWEI] user-interface console 0
[HUAWEI-ui-console0] authentication-mode password
[HUAWEI-ui-console0] set authentication password cipher h*****@***
[HUAWEI-ui-console0] return
Step 3. Run the save command to save the configuration and prevent configuration loss after the restart.
Method 2: Clear the password on the console port using BootROM and then set the password for login through the console port.
Note: If the switch has two MPUs, remove the standby MPU before restarting the switch. After performing the following operations, install the standby MPU and run the save command to ensure that the configurations on the active and standby MPUs are the same.
You can use the switch's BootROM menu to clear the password for console port login and skip password check when logging in to the switch using the console port. After the switch starts, you can change the password for console port login and save the configuration.
Step 1. Connect a host to the switch through a serial cable and restart the switch. When the message "Press Ctrl+B to enter Boot Menu..." is displayed, press Ctrl+B and enter the password (default password: A****@******). The BootROM main menu is displayed.
Step 2: Choose Clear password for console user under the BootROM main menu to clear the password for login through the console port.
Step 3. Choose Boot with default mode under the BootROM main menu to restart the switch.
Note: Do not choose Reboot; otherwise, the password fails to be cleared.
Step 4. After the switch starts, you can log in to the switch through the console port without entering the password only this time. After logging in to the switch, configure a new console port login password immediately. This following uses password authentication configuration as an example and the password is set to h*****@***.
<HUAWEI> system-view
[HUAWEI] user-interface console 0
[HUAWEI-ui-console0] authentication-mode password
[HUAWEI-ui-console0] set authentication password cipher h*****@***
[HUAWEI-ui-console0] return
Step 5. Run the save command to save the configuration and prevent configuration loss after the restart.
2. Restoring the Telnet Login Password
If you forget the Telnet login password, log in to the switch in other ways (for example, through the console port) and change the Telnet login password.
Step 1. Log in to the switch in other ways (for example, through the console port).
Step 2. Change the user password.
For example, configure AAA authentication in VTY user interfaces 0 to 4 and set the password of user huawei to h*****@***.
<HUAWEI> system-view
[HUAWEI] user-interface vty 0 4
[HUAWEI-ui-vty0-4] authentication-mode aaa
[HUAWEI-ui-vty0-4] quit
[HUAWEI] aaa
[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei password irreversible-cipher h*****@***
[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei service-type telnet
[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei privilege level 3
3. Restoring the Password for Login Through the Web System
If you forget the password for login through the Web system, log in to the switch in other ways (for example, through the console port) and change the password for login through the Web system.
Step 1. Log in to the switch in other ways (for example, through the console port).
Step 2. Change the user password.
For example, set the password of user huawei to h*****@***.
<HUAWEI> system-view
[HUAWEI] aaa
[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei password irreversible-cipher h*****@***
[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei service-type http
[HUAWEI-aaa] local-user huawei privilege level 3
4. Restoring the BootROM Login Password
If you forget the password for login through the BootROM menu, log in to the switch in other ways (for example, through the console port) and change the password for login through the BootROM menu.
Step 1. Log in to the switch through the console port.
Step 2. Run the reset boot password command in any view to restore the default password A****@****** for login through the BootROM menu.
Step 3. Run the reboot command in the user view to restart the switch.
Step 4. When the message "Press Ctrl+B to enter Boot Menu..." is displayed during the restart, press Ctrl+B and enter the default password. The BootROM main menu is displayed.
Step 5: Choose Modify bootrom password under the BootROM main menu to change the password as prompted.
