Symptom
For an ODB system with 80 x 40G channels, the output optical power of a single wavelength on the WDM side cannot be higher than +1 dBm.
On a live OptiX BWS 1600G network with 40G channels, ODB wavelength conversion boards are configured on the client side, and OAU05 and OBU05 boards are configured on the WDM side. In an 80-channel system, the standard single-wavelength output optical power of OAU05 and OBU05 boards is +4 dBm.
This shows that commissioning requirements and actual network conditions conflict. Therefore, there come two questions: Is the amplifier types correct? Do users need to commission the WDM-side optical power on the wavelength conversion board to +1 dBm or +4 dBm?
Cause analysis
In principle, the WDM-side optical power on a wavelength conversion board in a 40G WDM system should be commissioned to +1 dBm. In practical application, however, a long span often has high attenuation. To offset the high attenuation, OAU05 or OBU05 boards must be used because they have high output optical power.
This guarantees proper OSNR on the network.
