Upper-layer or Lower-layer Device Exception Caused by Bit Errors on Switch Ports

158 0 1 0 0

[Problem Description]

A large number of bit errors occur on the storage device and alarms are reported, ports are intermittently disconnected, or upper-layer services are slow.

[Symptom Description]

The storage port has a large number of bit errors, but the storage port is normal.

[Cause]

A large number of bit errors are stored on the switch link, causing communication exceptions.

[Location Method]

1. Collect switch logs in supportave or supportshow mode. (If possible, collect the logs in supportave mode.)

1

For details, see the switch log collection guide.

Note: Supportave logs need to be decompressed and integrated using Brocade's gadget.

Place the tool in a folder containing 53 compressed packages and double-click quickCheck.exe.

2. Open the supportshow file or the .txt file with the suffix SUPPORT SHOW_ALL and search for the output of the porterrshow command.

1

Pay attention to the counts of the enc in, crc err, and crc g_eof columns. The faults are as follows:

A. The three columns are basically the same, on the same order of magnitude. Run the sfpshow –all command to query the optical power of the port.

1

If the receive optical power is low, the optical module or optical fiber at the peer end is of poor quality. If the transmit optical power is too low, the local optical module is faulty.

B. enc in, crc err, numerical fundamental phase, crc g_eof is basically zero. This problem is caused by link transparent transmission. This port is basically a cascading port. You need to check the bit errors of the cascading switch.

3. Replace the optical fiber or optical module of the corresponding port, and then run the stats clear command. When services are running, observe the statistics for 30 minutes to 1 hour to check whether the number of bit errors increases.

[Solution]

Replace the optical fiber and optical module of the corresponding port.

[Emergency Measures]

Same as the solution.

[Post-Recovery Check]

Check whether the port still generates the number of bit errors.
