Process for troubleshooting a performance problem
Step 1 Ask the following questions (4W1H):
What performance problem occurred?
When did the performance problem occur?
How was performance problem detected?
Why is the performance problem suspected?
Which LUN or host has the performance problem?
Step 2 Collect the following information:
Screenshots of symptoms
Storage logs
Storage performance data
Step 3 Locate the problem.
Strategy for locating a performance problem
1. You can locate a performance problem by comparing the average latency on the host side with that on the storage side.
2. If the latencies on both sides are high and the difference between the latencies is small, the storage system may have a problem.
3. If the host latency is much higher than the storage latency, the host configurations may be incorrect or network links may malfunction.
4. Locate the problem (on the host, storage, or network side) before further analysis.
