Hi,

How does BGP peer know, if it is 2 byte My AS Number or 4 byte My AS Number in OPEN message.

As per RFC 4271, it is supposed to be two bytes. As per RFC 6793, it should be four bytes.

Reason for my confusion is, initial data exchanged will be OPEN message. My ASN should be processed first before control reaches capabilities. Moreover, there is no indication for finding whether peer is sending 2 byte ASN or 4 byte ASN.

Hi, friend!
Huawei currently uses RC4271 for BGP-4. I just looked at the structure of the BGP packet, and it does use 2 bytes. From my personal understanding, we should query the RFC rules that the vendor complies with. If the vendor complies with RFC4271, it should be the 2 bytes used. As for your confusion, my understanding is that the RFC standards used by the devices at both ends should be the same. A BGP peer relationship can be established only when the ASN configured on the local end is the same as that configured on the peer end.

If the connection between the new speaker and the old speaker is set up and the AS number of the new speaker is greater than 65535, the AS number of the old speaker must be specified as AS_TRANS. In the preceding command, AS_TRANS is the reserved AS number and its value is 23456.
