At the Mobile World Congress 2022 (MWC 2022), Richard Jin, Vice President of Huawei and President of the Optical Business Product Line, delivered a keynote speech titled "Green Intelligent OptiX Network, Lighting Up the Way to Industrial Digitalization". In the speech, Richard proposed the "FIBERS" concept for industrial digitalization and released the Green Intelligent OptiX Network for enterprises. The "FIBERS" means saFe, Intelligent, Ultra-Broadband, Efficient, Reliable and Simple.

Please share your expectations about future optical transmission networks based on your experience in the operation and maintenance of the optical transmission network.

Thanks for inviting

Fiber optic cables consist of either one or many thin strands of glass, which are protected by a flexible, transparent sheath. Rather than using electrical pulses to communicate information, this technology uses pulses of light. As a result, it offers technically boundless performance capabilities. The capacity may be even more than you imagine. The newest transatlantic cable is capable of transmitting 100 hours of digital video or 30 million phone calls from one side of the ocean to the other at speeds of a single second. This technology is the backbone of military networking, medical imaging and laser practices, and private and public networking for cable and internet.

One of the reasons fiber cables are so widely used is because they are extremely secure. This technology does not contain an electromagnetic field, so data cannot be intercepted, slowed, or jumbled with other signals. The safety, speed, and security of fiber optics does come at a higher cost relative to other cable options on the market. But compared to the rising costs of copper, which is used in other cable technology, it remains competitively priced in the marketplace. Plus, metallic wiring is naturally thicker, which reduces load capacity and makes installation difficult in more challenging environments. Fiber optics provide the clarity and safety that modern homeowners and business leaders expect in infrastructure projects.

Society has become much more dependent on fast and reliable communication. The way we work, entertain and connect with each other has made us fully dependent on a somewhat invisible optical fabric that is silently expanding. As artificial intelligence and machine learning become more widespread in our daily lives during the next decades, this dependence on the optical fabric can only increase. And we see already the beginning of this unavoidable expansion as the optical signal – once limited to long distances – has been moving deeper into all networks, in a trajectory that connects directly with wireless and shrinks the space for electrical transmission.

The next 50 years of optical communications will most likely be dedicated to addressing key fundamental challenges to make the optical expansion more efficient and practical, and to make these predictions even riskier (and more fun).

The five top areas will, I believe, be related to:

Energy: Reducing the energy per bit to significantly under pico Joules per bit is feasible and will probably be the most significant driver to convert some of the last application spaces from electrical to optical. This will require a better and more efficient …
Integration between electronics and photonics elements, where key advancements are triggered by early initiatives in on-board and co-packaged optics with integrated photonics being the key player. Further gains will then be obtained by …
Miniaturization of optical components leveraging nanostructures and metasurfaces, where structures engineered at sub-wavelength dimensions will dramatically reduce the size and increase the efficiency of most optical components used today for light generation, management and detection. Once superior levels of efficiency are possible, we should see another step in …
Optical spatial density and robustness, where essentially more optical bits will be flowing per unit of area. This will happen practically with more fibers in cables, higher-density optical connectors, more optical ports in optical switches, etc. This increase in density will keep pushing the boundaries of robustness as optical communications covers more communication spaces, including harsh and consumer environments, which will bring us back to necessary advancements in …
Photon management at its more fundamental level. Improved guiding through other mechanisms and materials (including air) and coupling in and out of fibers and other waveguides becomes essential as the amount of energy lost in coupling and decoupling becomes a barrier for big efficiency gains. This will be followed by the need to manage single photons, likely triggered by advancements in quantum computers that will naturally create a threat for classical encryption systems, driving the need for practical quantum communication systems.

Thank you for your statement. Welcome to keep an eye on our developments.

Optical Network Technologies for Future Digital Cinema:

The optical communications technology would foster the transformation of the cinema industry into an all-digital immersive experience. This transformation will bring about disruptive changes to the cinematography work flow with more advanced acquisition and editing processes, video compression, communication, and transport mechanisms being deployed. The cloud based optical network architecture would enable a fully integrated global content distribution network for rich multimedia applications integrated seamlessly for home screening, broadcasting, and mobile viewing.

The future may bring the digital content migration from an intraonly (frame by frame) compression to exploiting interframe compression. The infrastructure will enable further advancements as the availability of high speed networks coupled with an unprecedented increase in multimedia communications from mobile and other capture devices will create both opportunities and challenges. The affordability of digital content generation and distribution will encourage new entrants to a previously restricted and specialized domain, ultimately bringing the art of movie-making into the public domain.

Thanks!
Hello,
The optical transmission network in its first stage used to be the core network . But after that it get closer to the customer .
In term of people life.I expect Optical network will be more close in people life , homes and work and replace all connections like UTP , USB , HDMI ...etc .
In telecomm network , I expect more capacity with longer distances with no need for amplifiers .

A network that more optical dependant and less electrical dependant

I expect a new technology for expanding line capacity other than DWDM .
I expect a fiber with no non liner affect and with lowest attenuation , that can work in any band.
