In some cases, we need to establish ultra-long-haul optical transmission communication systems. If OA boards cannot meet the requirements, we need to add regeneration sites. Sometimes we use the optical repeater and sometimes we use the electrical repeater. What are the characteristics of the two relay modes?

An optical repeater is used in fiber optic communication. Basically, it is used to regenerate an optical signal. Loss occurs in communication due to attenuation. And if you use this repeater, then it will extend the reach of an optical communication link. To correct distortion, optical repeater converts an optical signal into an electrical signal. It processes the electrical signal and retransmits an optical signal in the end. One optical repeater is required for each wavelength. A fiber optic repeater can convert wavelength for WDM environment. Using an optical repeater, it can be possible to convert a fast Ethernet fiber into a single mode fiber.
A repeater is an electronic device in a communication channel that increases the power of a signal and retransmits it, allowing it to travel further. Since it amplifies the signal, it requires a source of electric power. Electrical repeaters are limited in bandwidth and modulation format.

In my opinion, optical regenerators are simple in structure and low in cost. The electrical regeneration has a complex structure and a large number of intra-site fiber connections, resulting in high costs.

in term of signal quality :- the electrical repeating is much better as it regenerates not only the optical signal but also retime the signal and regenerate it , so it increases the network distance and enhance the OSNR value, while the optical amplifiers reduces the OSNR  in differnet values.


in term of the cost :- the optical regeneration is cheaper ,As the electrical regeneration must also have optical boards in the sites beside the electrical regeneration boards , also dont forget that the electrical regeneration boards are so expensive especially in the rates beyond the 100G.


in term of complexty :- the electrical sites are more complex than the optical 

in terms of protection :-  if the site have many diversed directions so it can support a hub node to direct service into other routes , and this is applicable to the electrical and optical repeaters
