Use VPN to make sure the public WiFi connection is made private
Make sure to visit sites using HTTPS
Log out of accounts after using
File sharing should be disabled

DON'Ts:

Do not leave your Wi-Fi connection on auto-connect
Do not leave your Wi-Fi connection ON if not using it
Do not leave your Bluetooth connection ON if not using it
Do not log log into any account through an APP that contains sensitive information, go directly to the website instead & make sure it uses HTTPS before logging in
Avoid accessing websites that hold your sensitive information, like financial accounts
Avoid Log onto a network that is not password protected

I think public WIFI gives to hackers the ability to visualize and read your traffic as it's encrypted; however, I think when you use a VPN, your traffic gets encrypted, so no one can intercept it via public Wi-Fi. VPN secures your connection everywhere, so you no longer need to care about external protection.

I don't like to use public WIFI. It's dangerous and you are totally on the dependency of hackers. So, if I have no choice but to use it, I always connect secure-VPN before using any app or sending any data. It at leasts gives me some satisfaction
