Wireless covers almost everywhere you go today, so you are at risk in most places.

If you just moved to a new home, and your are concerned about remote cameras, you can identify and crack into strong wireless networks within your home to confirm your home is not being monitored.
But if you live in a dense housing area, you maybe monitoring what your neighbors are doing by breaking into their home... :(

As for public places, that is more difficult to identify rogue networks and devices.

How to identify is the key.
It's possible to use your Android phone's camera and magnetometer sensor to detect hidden cameras and microphones or other listening devices. The camera lens on your Android phone will pick up infrared light if you hold your device close enough. But it's not very efficient solution.
I believe there are some kind of detectors that can be able to detect the presence of surveillance cameras, especially, the smallest ones.

Yes, the phone can detect the presence of some cameras, but that's not 100%. Sometimes even if the phone is next to the camera, it's not always possible to detect it!
And the professional inspection equipment price is more expensive, ordinary people should not buy.

Incredible.
First, do a wireless scan to check any cameras connected to the same network.
second, turn off the lights and try to find any IR LEDs showing in the room.

You may need to keep your phone close to the wall and search little by little. When the test is finished, it's dawn and you can check out.
Rarely will anyone attempt to harm you when they know their actions are being recorded on camera. Cameras keep you and your personal property safe.

The police can identify criminals recorded with cameras. Through surveillance cameras, the police can both prevent crimes from happening and can quickly solve criminal cases with material evidence.
In addition, surveillance cameras protect against property theft, and vandalism. It is very difficult to get away with stealing something if there are cameras filming you. Therefore, the thief will often get caught. Surveillance cameras will catch the thief before, or during the process of committing the crime.
If no one is aware of the crime until after it has been committed, the surveillance footage is always a crucial piece of evidence during a police investigation. Surveillance cameras have, and will provide a solution to many crimes.
Some people may say that we should not have surveillance cameras in public places. They claim that they invade privacy. The argument here, however, is why be out in public if you want privacy? Surveillance cameras are meant to keep you and other property safe, not to stalk you. Cameras are there not to invade a person’s privacy but to protect the public by deterring criminal activity and by providing material evidence when a crime has been caught on film.
Criminals are less likely to commit crimes in the area if they know they’re going to be being filmed the whole time. Unscrupulous activities like shoplifting hardly seem worth it when pitted against the possibility of going to jail.
Having cameras in public places make people feel safe. If people know that there are cameras around them, they will most likely not do anything stupid. People feel safer in the knowledge that a potential mugger or attacker will be put-off by the presence of a camera.
Cameras, through video analytics, now have the ability to zoom in to reveal someone’s identity which can be beneficial to crime prevention when used in the correct way. The criminal can be apprehended quickly. Especially in abduction cases a video would be a great way of tracking down a person quickly and maybe preventing a death!
The growth of facial recognition and analytical software enables much greater predictive insights into criminal behaviour and more accurate reporting.

I think you're well protected.
Some unsecured hotels, hostels, under the lure of money, are likely to install cameras where they shouldn't be installed.

Cameras keep you and your personal property safe.
As you can use it for noble reasons you can use it for shady reasons and I think the privacy issues are mostly related to the places we frequent.

Yes, choosing a place of authority is a great way to avoid this kind of problem.
Hi,

This is a major security risk. There isn't a 100% secure way to find out if there is a hidden camera anywhere. There can be a camera in the doorknob too or in the locks, behind a mirror or in ceiling fan/ air duct, so basically anywhere. There are some tricks that I recommend to be safe:

1. The best way to chose a hotel that complies with GDPR (as they'll have to pay HEAVY fines if caught)
2. For lockers or changing rooms, try to chose known brands or stores, as their goodwill and good name is at stake. And if some rouge employee is doing it, they'll go to extensive lengths to get you justice.
3. For an apartment, it is absolutely necessary to check the power outlets, wireless networks and any other electronic circuits. It is even routine checkup for whenever you are leasing an apartment. So, during that a lot of issues are identified and through wireless network scan and power circuit design, any hidden cameras will also be identified.

I hope it helps anyone concern about privacy issues. And on lighter note, whenever you enter any premises, just say loudly, "I can see you hiding there, come out before I call police."

Yes, choosing an influential place can largely avoid this problem.
With the ease of technology, privacy is also becoming compromised every day without even realizing by the victims. Internet of Things (IoT) is a new revolutionary approach that gave rise to new way of communication and changing the traditional way of living by enabling the communication between electronic devices and sensors through the internet in order to facilitate our lives. There are still a lot of challenges and issues with the new emerging technologies specially the security and privacy concerns.

Coming back to topic on how to check monitoring camera effectively, the following are common precautionary steps can be taken for detecting such monitoring/hidden/spy/surveillance cameras:

Use your observation skills to scan any suspicious hidden video camera by carefully and thoroughly looking at each and every thing whether is a plan wall or any object.

To Find Hidden Cameras Indoors, look for the following places carefully:

Air filter equipment
Books
Clothes hooks
Couch cushions
Desk plants
Digital TV boxes
DVD cases
Electrical outlets
Hairdryer holders
Holes on the doors
House plants
Lava lamps
Light bulbs
Mirrors
Neckties and tie clips
Outlets
Pens
Shelves
Smoke detectors
Speakers
Stuffed teddy bears
Tabletops
The doorbell outside your home
The roof of the house
Tissue boxes
Wall décor
Wall or alarm clocks
Wall sockets

Turn off the Lights and draw the curtins in the Room to Spot if any Hidden Night Vision Camera is installed. Observe if any blinking red or green LEDs in the room.

Make a call with your Mobile Phones and walk around the room. Hidden surveillance normally would give off a special radio frequency that would interfere with your phone call signal.

Turn on the video or camera function on your mobile phone, scan the room. You're likely not going to see anything, but hold your remote control up pointed at the camera and press a button. You'll see a red laser or beam.

Check the Mirrors in Room, toilet, changing or trial rooms to Pinpoint Hidden Spy Cameras by putting your fingernail in the mirror & Observe the gap between your finger and the mirror.

Using Flashlight to detect a hidden camera - Turn on the flashlight and turn off the lights in the room. Move slowly and be thorough— spy cameras are meant to stay hidden and can be quite small. If you notice any reflective lights from an object, there might be a hidden camera there.

Usig Wi-Fi sniffing apps to find recording devices that are connected to the local network.

I once saw a video of a camera, and the tester said it was almost impossible to detect the presence of a camera other than a professional instrument. It scares us!
So choosing some reputable hotels is the first step

Yes, agreed but it is not guaranteed 100% secure and the common precautionary steps must be taken at any cost.

Assumption: I spend $200 for accommodation, and to be safe, I buy a testing device for $300.
That's obviously something that a lot of people don't agree with.
