Topic discussion

In 1970, Corning manufactured the first low-loss quartz fiber with 20 dB/km attenuation, which marked a new chapter in optical communications in the world. Since then, optical fiber communication technology has emerged from optical communication, and it has become one of the main pillars of modern communication, playing a pivotal role in modern telecommunication networks. The optical fiber communication technology has accelerated the development and progress of human social sciences and culture.

Based on your personal experience, please list how fiber optic communication has changed our lives and work in the comment area below the post.

Faster internet
Fiber optic cables can transmit large amounts of data at very high speeds. That’s why the technology is widely used in internet cables. Compared to the more traditional copper wires, fiber optic cables are lighter, more flexible and able to carry a lot more data.

Surgery and dentistry
Fiber optic cables are widely used in medical procedures. Optical communication is an important part of non-intrusive surgical methods, popularly known as endoscopy. As part of these procedures, a bright light is used to illuminate an area within the body. This helps to reduce the number and size of incisions made.

Another way that fiber optics have impacted our world and the computer science world is communication between two computers. For information transmission: “you could hook your computer up to a laser, which would convert the electrical information from the computer into a series of light pulses. Then you would fire the laser down the fiber-optic cable. After traveling down the cable, the light beams would emerge at the other end: your friends’ computer.” The only thing your friend would need is a photoelectric cell to turn the light pulses back into electrical information that the computer could understand. This is basically a high tech version of the telephone you make out of two cans and a string!

Additionally, fiber optic cables are the main way of carrying information over great distances because they have 3 advantages over old-style copper cables, which were used previously. The three advantages are less attenuation, no interference and higher bandwidth. “Less attenuation basically means that there is less signal loss when using fiber optics. With no interference, this means that information is transmitted more reliably with better signal quality. As for higher bandwidth, we have seen that fiber optic cables can carry far larger amounts of data than copper cables.”

Dear friend!
You've not only described the present, but you've also predicted its future.

Interesting question How has fiber optic communications changed our lives and work? First, answering myself as a telecommunications professional, I will answer as I see it. I began to work professionally when I graduated in 2008 in the telecommunications operator of my country and in 2010 I began to work in the fiber optic and coaxial cable intervention unit. If we still maintain a system of 1920 telephone channels with multiplex frequency as a backup to the vital communications of the country and fiber optics was already in all territories. First of all, fiber optic interruptions last a few hours at most 4 hours but the coaxial cable is a tremendous headache, there is no answer, the splices are made by copper workers of the old era, you have to put lead, inject air, there is no Answered and also almost nobody cares. Fiber optics is fast, the job is pretty clean and systems usually come in right away. On the other hand, the optical fiber is already there and the systems have already been changing, first they supported optical PDH, then came SDH, DWDM that support the traditional SDH and the Metro Ethernet network bringing 4G in my country in record time in just 2 years . To end this Covid-19, thanks to communications we can work from home, see our friends, enjoy social networks, audiovisuals and games. Telecommunications systems are closely related but fiber optics is the support. Information travels through it: Attention Hello World.

Thank you so much for your statement! You describe what's going on around you and it's very real. I wish you and your loved ones, friends, and your country a speedy recovery from the epidemic.
Hi,

Optical fiber has transformed the networks; helped us move from costly satellite connections and microwave connections to a more stable option. It also helped ensure reliable multi-gig connections that were simply not possible without the fiber. Copper could only carry a certain data and after that it is helpless but with fiber, everything moves with the speed of light Topic discussion | How does optical fiber communication change our life and work [Issue 2]-3871517-1

Thank you so much for your statement! Yes, optical fiber communication is fast. Currently, in a WDM system, the rate of each wavelength can reach 800 Gbit/s.

That's very cool and somehow frightening at the same time. Keeping in view the historic speedgains, what do you think will be the next step?

I think it could be all-optical and quantum communications (one wired, the other wireless).

That should be interesting ... looking forward to it.
