Hello, everyone!

Large vendors are doubling down with cloud-like solutions that can be deployed anywhere, with content delivery networks and data center hosting vendors offering edge computing services in hundreds or thousands of local locations, Forrester Research predicts.

Edge computing will be the new cloud, with new edge vendors cutting 5 percentage points from next year's public cloud growth.

Edge computing VS Cloud computing

What do you think of that?

What is Edge Computing?

What is cloud computing?

What is the difference between edge computing and cloud computing?

Edge computing and cloud computing are like branches and trunks. Edge computing is branches and cloud computing is trunks.

Edge computing means that a branch receives application data from a leaf, processes the data, and then forwards and stores the data. If some data does not need to be processed again, it does not need to be processed by the trunk.
Cloud computing means that branches receive application data from leaves and directly forward the data to the trunk for unified computing and processing.

Edge computing can mean faster, more stable services at a lower cost. Edge computing can reduce network costs, avoid bandwidth constraints, reduce transmission delays, limit service failures, and provide better control over the movement of sensitive data.

Edge

Network functions and applications are deployed at the edge of the network, as close to the end-user as possible, reducing transmission delays and delivering an ultra-low latency.

Computing

This refers to Cloud + Fog computing, which adopts the computing technology to reduce the construction and O&M cost of a large-scale distributed network. Such capabilities include video coding and decoding, VR/AR rendering, video analysis and AI.

Consequently, deciding whether to prioritize edge or cloud computing isn't a binary decision. Organizations will need to create effective edge computing architectures to maximize the promise of IoT devices as they grow more pervasive and powerful. Companies can leverage the promise of both technologies while limiting their limitations by combining edge computing with centralized cloud computing (a network infrastructure commonly referred to as fog computing). Many will attempt to do so by collocating their IT infrastructure with a data center.

Storage worries are unlikely to go away anytime soon, given that all people, machines, and things are predicted to generate a remarkable 2.5 quintillion bytes of data each day. Furthermore, predictions suggest that during the following year, IoT devices will generate 79.4 zettabytes of data.

It's worth remembering, though, that the edge isn't simply about IoT. In fact, the promise of edge computing extends far beyond the application industry and any streaming technology. Partnering with a data center that is leveraging edge capabilities is a smart choice if your company or organization plans to launch an application that relies on data and information.

Companies can keep their applications and IoT devices running quickly and efficiently without sacrificing valuable analytical data that could help them improve services and drive innovation by combining the data-gathering potential of edge computing with the storage capacity and processing power of the cloud.

An edge is a computing location at the edge of a network, along with the hardware and software at those physical locations. Cloud computing is the act of running workloads within clouds, while edge computing is the act of running workloads on edge devices.

It’s important to understand that cloud and edge computing are different, non-interchangeable technologies that cannot replace one another. Edge computing is used to process time-sensitive data, while cloud computing is used to process data that is not time-driven.

Besides latency, edge computing is preferred over cloud computing in remote locations, where there is limited or no connectivity to a centralized location. These locations require local storage, similar to a mini data center, with edge computing providing the perfect solution for it.

Edge computing is also beneficial to specialize and intelligent devices. While these devices are akin to PCs, they are not regular computing devices designed to perform multiple functions. These specialized computing devices are intelligent and respond to particular machines in a specific way. However, this specialization becomes a drawback for edge computing in certain industries that require immediate responses.

I think edge computing is about collecting, storing, processing and analyzing data near the client, where the data is generated, instead of in a centralized data-processing warehouse.

Edge computing is a cloud computing but near the data source. It's in the edge
