In the intelligent era, cameras have entered the multi-dimensional intelligent perception field. Traditional cameras have application limitations due to the binding of software and hardware. Therefore, Huawei launches software-defined cameras, which use the design concept of separating intelligent algorithms from hardware bases. When the computing power of the hardware base is sufficient, engineers implement continuous online iteration and self-learning on camera front-end algorithms to achieve one hardware investment and sustainable algorithm growth throughout the lifecycle.

Faced with ever-changing requirements and massive amounts of information and data, AI computing power has become an important foundation for intelligent vision products. Huawei software-defined cameras use super-computing AI chips to build X, M, C, and D series. Different algorithms can be loaded with different computing power. Service diverse intelligent requirements.

  • X (eXtra) series: Boasting superior AI chips and a full algorithm set.

  • M (Magic) series: Consisting of Intensive AI-powered cameras that feature lightweight computing power and intelligence.

  • C (Credible) series: Defined by simplified O&M, high-level video quality diagnosis and a more than ideal viewing experience for ultra-HD footage.

  • D series: Focus on the distribution market and build a series of inclusive AI products for a wide range of industries.

According to IHS Markit, the global shipment of professional network cameras in 2017 was about 80 million. From 2017 to 2022, the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) will increase by 40 percent. The main powerhouse for the market growth comes from two aspects. One is emerging markets’ growing demands for new installment projects — for example, in India, South Asia, and South America. The other is the ever-increasing demands to upgrade standard cameras to smart ones. So now, security cameras are used to ensure security as well as to implement business intelligence, city management, and other IoT applications.
For smart cameras, the mission-critical task is to enable sustained algorithm upgrades. With a traditional camera, if users want to switch among different vendors’ algorithms they need to replace the camera. In a world with ever-changing technologies and functionalities, this approach is impractical because it hinders end users ability to try new technologies and requires sunk costs for specific manufacturers and proprietary interfaces. This is why we need an open-ended platform and camera to integrate different deep learning algorithms fast by decoupling software from hardware. The software-defined camera provides an open-ended platform, so the upgrade or replacement of applications and algorithms is effortless.

I think it was a necessary step towards the IVS evolution. as everything is moving towards the software defined domain, it was critical to match the future requirements.
Moreover, customer demands are also changing on daily basis and so are the threats. So, these software defined cameras can adapt to user requirements and make it easier to use.

I like what you said: Moreover, customer demands are also changing on daily basis and so are the threats.
Almost all development stems from threats.

exactly. Necessity is a mother of invention. but with SDC, it would be easier to manage the requirements without altering the whole hardware.

then useful
I think it is a very innovative technology in accordance with the advances in science and technology, since hardware can already accompany software thanks to higher communication speeds and low latency and lower costs.
