BACKGROUND INFORMATION


When two types of communication devices are interconnected, there is an initial negotiation and information exchange. To ensure smooth interaction, a unified information format is required. As people of different nationalities need to communicate, they need to agree on a common language. When an ONU goes online, the common languages to be agreed upon with the OLT are physical layer OAM (PLOAM) and BMmap messages. PLOAM messages are OAM messages used to manage a PON at the physical layer. BWmap messages are used by the OLT to allocate the upstream bandwidth to ONUs.


After unified languages are agreed upon, communication can start. An ONU goes online in either of the following modes: unconfigured or pre-configured. The following describes the two modes.


GOING ONLINE UNCONFIGURED


Assume that a single subscriber needs to subscribe to services. In this case, an ONU is plugged in and automatically discovered for quick service provisioning. In this scenario, the ONU is not pre-configured on the OLT. It is directly brought to the subscriber's home by an installation person, plugged-in, powered on, automatically discovered by the OLT, and then confirmed before going online. Figure 1 shows the process for an ONU to go online when its information is not pre-configured on the OLT.

The process for an ONU to go online unconfigured involves five states:


Initial: the OLT sends a message to the ONU to start the ONU, and the ONU enters the standby state;


Standby: After receiving the message, the ONU extracts the delimiter value, power level, and pre-allocated compensation delay from the message, and adjusts its configurations accordingly to support subsequent information exchange.


Serial number: The OLT sends a serial number (SN) request to the ONU. The ONU sends its SN to the OLT. After receiving the SN of the ONU, the OLT allocates a temporary ONU ID to the ONU.


Ranging: The OLT sends a ranging request to the ONU. After receiving the ranging request from the OLT, the ONU responds with a message carrying its SN and ONU ID. The OLT calculates the compensation delay and sends it to the ONU in a message. After receiving the message, the ONU sets the compensation delay accordingly.


Operation: The OLT sends a password request to the ONU. The ONU returns a password to the OLT. 


The password is not configured on the OLT. If the automatic discovery function is enabled on the PON port of the OLT, the OLT reports an ONU auto-discovery alarm to the CLI or NMS. The ONU goes online normally only after being confirmed.


GOING ONLINE PRE-CONFIGURED


Another scenario is assumed as follows: ONUs need to be added in batches during deployment. In this case, all ONUs are added to the OLT in advance. That is, ONUs are pre-configured on the OLT in batches. When a subscriber needs to subscribe to services, an installation person only needs to bring an ONU to the subscriber's home and make some configurations. After the ONU goes online and passes the authentication, the service can be provisioned.


When boarding a high-speed train, you need to show a valid certificate to prove your identity. Similar, when an ONU goes online, the OLT needs to verify the certificates of the ONU to prevent unauthorized ONUs from accessing the network. The valid certificates of an ONU are its SN and password. An SN is the physical identifier of an ONU, and a password is the logical ONU identifier which is irrelevant to the hardware. A pre-configured ONU can go online in the following authentication modes: SN authentication, SN + password authentication, and password authentication.

Figure 2 shows the SN and SN + password authentication modes for an ONU. The SN + password authentication mode requires both SN and password matching, while the SN authentication mode requires only SN matching. That is, the SN authentication mode does not require password matching in the operation state.


In this process, how does the OLT reject illegal ONUs? In the SN state, if an ONU with the same SN is already online, the OLT reports an SN conflict alarm to the CLI and NMS. In the operation state, if the password reported by an ONU is different from that configured on the OLT, the OLT reports a password error alarm to the CLI or NMS.


In the password authentication mode, the OLT detects the password reported by an ONU. If the password is the same as that configured on the OLT, the ONU passes the authentication and goes online normally. This mode is applicable to the scenario where ONUs are added in batches. You only need to plan the ONU passwords and do not need to record the ONU SNs manually. For details, see Figure 3.
