Hello, everyone!

This article will briefly introduce what GPON is and what basic features it has.

PON is a passive optical network with a point-to-multipoint(P2MP) structure, GPON is one of the PON technology and is a gigabit PON defined by ITU-T G.984.x series standards.

IFgpon: GPON Interface

SNI: Service Node Interface

UNI: User to Network Interface

CPE: Customer Premises Equipment

OLT: Optical Line Termination (OLT), also called an optical line terminal, is a device that serves as the service provider endpoint of a passive optical network.

The ONU is a user-side unit or terminal that provides various interfaces for the user on the client. The OLT and the ONU are connected through an intermediate passive optical network ODN to communicate with each other.

The ODN (Optical Distribution Network) is composed of optical fibers, one or more passive optical components such as passive optical splitter. It provides optical channels between the OLT and the ONU, which is used to connect the OLT and the ONU and has high reliability. The ODN is the key to the PON technology. In the PON system, the functions of the ODN are as follows:

Downlink: Divide the signal of one channel delivered by the OLT into multiple channels and send them to each ONT respectively (the OLT broadcasts the signals and the ONT accepts the signals).

Uplink: The optical signals received by the ONT of multiple channels are converged into one channel of optical signals in TDM burst mode and sent to the OLT.

The GPON contains the following features:

(1) Further transmission distance: When optical fibers are used for transmission, the coverage radius of the access layer can reach up to 60 km. This solution can solve the contradiction between the distance and bandwidth of twisted pairs.

(2) Higher bandwidth: The maximum downstream rate of each port is 2.5 Gbit/s, and the maximum upstream rate of each port is 1.25 Gbit/s. This feature meets users' requirements for high-bandwidth services such as HD TV and live broadcast.

(3) QoS (Quality of Service) provides flexible full-service experience: Provides traffic control for the user and user services, ensuring multi-service bandwidth for multiple users and providing differentiated services for different user services.

(4) Optical splitting features: After optical splitting is performed on a single optical fiber at the local side, multiple FTTH fibers are led out. Which support 1:128 split ratio and save backbone optical fiber resources and reducing operation and maintenance costs.
