Overview
A cluster switch system (CSS) can be upgraded in one of the following ways: traditional upgrade, fast upgrade, split upgrade, and in-service software upgrade (ISSU). During a split upgrade, the standby switch first restarts with the new system software for an upgrade, and the master switch forwards data traffic. After the standby switch is upgraded, it becomes the new master switch and starts to forward data traffic. The original master switch, at this time, restarts with the new system software for an upgrade, and becomes the new standby switch after the upgrade. Split upgrade greatly reduces the service interruption duration during the upgrade and has little impact on services, compared with traditional upgrade and ISSU upgrade. Compared with fast upgrade, split upgrade is more reliable. This document describes the split upgrade process for a CSS.
