Management information refers to the collection of managed objects in the network management framework of the Internet. The managed object must maintain a number of control and state information that can be read and written by the management program. These managed objects form a virtual information memory, which is called the management information base MIB.
The TCP/IP network management protocol standard framework can be divided into three parts:
1. The first part is the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), which mainly relates to information communication related relations and message flows and defines how the management station software running on the management system communicates with the management agent, including the format, meaning and representation of the message group exchanged between the management system and the management agent.
In addition, the management relationship between managed devices is defined, that is, authorization management of the management system is provided.
2. The second part is the Structure of Management Information(SMI) - the standard symbol for describing management information. It describes the overall framework of defining and constructing the MIB and the representation and naming methods of data types.
3. The third part is the Management Information Base (MIB). The MIB defines the data items that must be saved by the managed device. The operation and meaning of each data item are allowed. That is, the data variables such as the control and status information of the managed devices that can be accessed by the management system are stored in the MIB. The universal format defined in the MIB supports the definition of a specific MIB group for each new managed device. Therefore, the vendor can define its dedicated management object by using a standard method, so that many new protocols and devices can be managed and the scalability is good.
The three parts are independent of each other and each part defines a separate standard (RFC). SNMP defines the communication mode and format, but does not mention any specific data on any particular devices. The data details of each device are defined in the MIB. This achieves the purpose of separating the control from data and provides good compatibility and scalability. SMI provides good support for maintaining the MIB simplicity and scalability.
