Hybrid is a special type of Layer 2 interface. Similar to the interface of the trunk type, the interface of the hybrid type can also carry data from multiple VLANs, and it can flexibly set whether the interface carries the tag when sending the data frame. On the other hand, hybrid interfaces can also be used to deploy IP address-based VLAN partitioning. Below we will talk about the configuration of the hybrid interface for several usage scenarios.

 

1. Hybrid interface is used to connect to the terminal PC.

In the above figure, PC1 is connected to GE0/0/1 of SW1. Now configure GE0/0/1 of SW1 as follows:

         [SW1] interface GigabitEthernet 0/0/1

         [SW1-GigabitEthernet0/0/1] port link-type hybrid

The above command is used to configure the interface to be a hybrid interface. Take the S5300 switch as an example. By default, the interface a hybrid interface. and VLAN 1 is set to PVID (default VLAN) and VLAN 1 is allowed to passthrough. (Port hybrid untagged vlan 1 is configured by default). Therefore, in this scenario, if IP address 192.168.10.0/24 is configured for Vlanif1 on SW1, PC1 and SW1 can communicate with each other. At this time, PC1 is considered to belong to VLAN 1.

 

If we want to plan PC1 in VLAN 10, the configuration is modified as follows:

         [SW1-Vlanif10] ip address 192.168.10.3 24

In the above configuration, the port hybrid pvid vlan 10 command is used to change the PVID of the interface to 10, so that when the interface receives the untagged frame sent by PC1, the frame is considered to be from VLAN 10; and the port hybrid untagged vlan 10 command is used to add the interface VLAN 10, to enable the data frame sent by PC1 to enter GE0/0/1 and enter the switch. In addition, this command enables the switch to send out VLAN 10 data frames from GE0/0/1 with untagged. Therefore, after completing the above configuration, PC1 is considered to belong to VLAN 10, and can ping the vlanif10 interface IP address of SW1: 192.168.10.3.

 

It is worth noting that after the data frame sent by PC1 enters the switch SW1, if SW1 only transparently forward the data frame, when the frame is sent from GE0/0/15, whether it carries the tags is based on the configuration of the interface GE0/0/15.

 

2. The Hybrid interface connect to the switch.

In the above figure, SW1 and SW2 are connected to PC1 and PC2 respectively. We configure GE0/0/1 of the two switches as access types and add them to VLAN 10. Then configure the interface GE0/0/15 on SW1 as trunk type, and VLAN 10 is allowed to passthrough.

Then, look at the GE0/0/15 interface of the SW2. If the hybrid type is used (the interface types of the switches at both ends of the link are configured to be consistent commonly). As the peer interface (SW1 GE0/0/15) sends the data frame of VLAN 10 in tagged mode, the GE0/0/15 interface of SW2 must also process VLAN 10 in tagged mode:

The port hybrid tagged vlan 10 command is used to add GE 0/0/15 to VLAN 10 and passthrough VLAN frame in the Tagged mode.

 

Now consider another situation, as shown below:

The SW1 is connected to VLANs 10, 20, and 1000. Now interface GE0/0/15 on SW1 are configured as follows:

when SW1 sends a data frame out through GE0/0/15, it uses the tagged frame for VLAN 10 and VLAN 20, and untagged for VLAN 1000. If SW2 is connected to SW1 with the hybrid interface. The configuration should be as follows:
