Software as a Service (SaaS) - an introduction

Hello, dear Community members!

You surely must have heard of the term 'Software as a Service', or Saas, as it was abbreviated some time ago. A widely used term to substitute 'over the Internet', Software as a service has been getting a lot of traction in the past decade, continuously growing year after year.

With applications in both consumer and enterprise markets, Saas is without a doubt an interesting thing to look at. Let us just do just that in the following sections of this blog!

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

SaaS

Let's start with a little definition of SaaS. According to our friends over at Salesforce, 'Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is a licensing and distribution model used to deliver software applications over the Internet i.e. as a service.' In other words, when the user needs a certain software, instead of getting the software shipped physically (CDs, DVDs, etc.) to them, they get the software directly from software provider's Cloud.

This model resembles the ones used in on-demand computing software delivery and by application services providers (ASPs). Just like in the 2 mentioned sectors, in Saas the customer's software is hosted by the provider and is intended to be delivered once the approval has been obtained by the user. Especially important - over the Internet.

WHERE CAN SaaS BE USED?

SaaS

There are many scenarios in which Software as a Service can be employed. Boasting incredible adaptability features, SaaS can be easily integrated into:

  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems;

  • email services;

  • shared company calendars;

  • automating sign-ups for products and services;

  • auditing services;

  • managing documents (file sharing and document collaboration).

Because of its collaborative nature, SaaS can easily be employed in human resource operations for example, where people are encouraged to share stuff for everyone else to edit and so on. This is a perfect example of an enterprise-scale application of SaaS.

SaaS BENEFITS

SaaS

If we were to mention the most essential benefits gained from using Software as a Service, the list would look something like this:

  • extremely scalable - SaaS can be used at the exact requirements of a business (if the business expands, Saas can also expand; if the business shrinks, the use of SaaS can shrink too);

  • accessible anytime, anywhere - since all it needs is an active Internet connection, Saas can literally be accessed regardless of the distance or the operating system;

  • maintenance is undertaken by the vendor - no need for assigning the in-house IT staff mundane tasks like updating or patching the company's software, as all updates are run by the SaaS provider;

  • low OPEX - no hardware means no asset value depreciation over time, while the pay-as-you go model guarantees an increased flexibility when making payments;

  • state of the art security - by purchasing SaaS from a vendor which also specializes in security solutions, the enterprise gets the highest level of protection against potential cyber-attacks.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The ease with which SaaS improves the overall operational performance of an enterprise is hard to be matched by other business models. Its highly scalable architecture is preferred by many Telecom businesses over traditional 'hardback' software. More content on new technologies to come if you stay tuned to our Community blog!

Software As A Service (SaaS) is a spoon feeding layer of the cloud computing service model. Everything is handled by the Cloud Service Provider on-behalf of the client or customer. Nice read.
