Good day esteemed Community!

One of the hottest topics in the industry, Security as a whole still doesn't cease to amaze technicians and telecom aficionados alike.

Combine Security and the Cloud and there you have it - Security as a Service or SECaaS. A relatively new concept, it has however managed to get quite a few adepts. Maybe more after reading this blog :)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Security as a Service (SECaaS)

Let us start this post as we should, that is, by conceptualizing Security as a Service. Therefore, according to DigitalGuardian.com, 'Security as a service (SECaaS) is an outsourced service wherein an outside company handles and manages your security. At its most basic, the simplest example of security as a service is using an anti-virus software over the Internet. With security as a service, security solutions are no longer delivered locally, where your IT department installs virus protection software, spam filtering software, and other security tools on each machine or on the network or server in your workplace, keeping the software up-to-date or telling them to use it. [...] security as a service allows you to use the same tools using only a web browser, making it direct and affordable.'

Basically, this technology is about 'renting out' all the necessary security solutions, tools and software from a third-party vendor who makes them all available over the Cloud. Is this not one of the coolest concepts you have ever heard of?

WHERE CAN SECaaS BE USED?

Security as a Service (SECaaS)

Among the scenarios in which Security as a Service can be used, there are quite a few that can easily be spotted. For example, we've got:

  • continuous monitoring;

  • Data Loss Prevention (DLP);

  • Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC/DR or BCDR);

  • email security;

  • antivirus management;

  • spam filtering;

  • Identity and Access Management (IAM);

  • intrusion protection;

  • security assessment;

  • network security;

  • Security Information and Event Management (SIEM);

  • web security;

  • vulnerability scanning.

SECaaS BENEFITS

Security as a Service (SECaaS)

Security as a Service provides countless benefits to the enterprise that decides to go with this approach. It is worth, thus, mentioning:

  • it saves time - via SECaaS, repetitive, time-consuming processes are carried out by the SECaaS vendor, which frees up a lot of manhours from the internal admin staff;

  • it comes from the best in the industry - the SECaaS vendor is usually one of the industry elites, meaning that the service will come alongside the highest degree of cybersecurity expertise;

  • it saves money - the 'pay-as you-go', subscription-based model based on which the billing is done in SECaaS is what saves you a lot a money in the long run;

  • the vendor is responsibile of it running smoothly - since the company that contracts SECaaS is not the actual owner of the whole security service being provided, all maintenance, updates and upkeep of the network will be the responsibility of the vendor.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Industrial digital transformation is shaping today and tomorrow's business environment, with more and more enterprises switching to a 'as a Service' (over the Internet) approach to be integrated within their business processes. Network security makes no exception, as Security as a Service has become the norm in the Telecom world. Subscribe to the Community blog for more content on new technologies!
