Today we talk about Scale-Up and Scale-Out. Scale-Up is a traditional vertical expansion architecture. It continuously adds storage devices to the existing storage systems to cope with ever-increasing data volumes. Scale-Out is a horizontal expansion architecture. It adds more controllers to meet the requirements of data growth in the unit of nodes.

Horizontal scaling: Adds more controllers to a storage system to cope
    with ever-increasing data volumes.

Scale-Up

Vertical scaling: Continuously adds storage devices to the existing
    storage systems to cope with ever-increasing data volumes.

Serial Attached SCSI: Connects disks by leveraging parallel SCSI
    and serial connection technologies.

Scaling out is adding more equivalently functional components in parallel to spread out a load. This would be going from two load-balanced web server instances to three instances. Scaling up, in contrast, is making a component larger or faster to handle a greater load.

Here is the difference between scale-up and scale-out.
