SAN Boot is a network storage management system that completely stores data (including the server operating system) on the storage system. The operating system is installed on the SAN storage system and booted from the SAN storage system. Therefore, SAN Boot is called For REMOTE BOOT or boot from SAN.
SAN Boot has many benefits for system integration and centralized management. The advantages are as follows:
- Server Consolidation: A large number of servers are integrated in a small space through a blade server without configuring a local hard disk.
- Centralized management: The server's boot disk is centralized to the storage system for management, which can make full use of various advanced management functions of the storage system. For example, you can use the snapshot function on the storage system to back it up. For the same type of server, you can use the snapshot to quickly deploy it. You can also use the remote replication function to perform disaster recovery.
- Fast failover: Once a SAN Boot server fails, its boot volume can be quickly mapped to other servers for fast failover.
The startup mode supported by UltraPath:
- Boot from Local: Install the operating system on the local disk of the application server and start the application server from the local disk.
- Boot from SAN: Install the operating system on the SAN storage system and start the application server from the SAN storage system.
