4  System Maintenance Methods

4.1  Restarting the Device

This section describes how to restart the device. Restarting the device can rectify some software faults.

There are two device restart methods: turning the power off and then on and using commands.
  • Generally, restarting the device using commands is used. In this mode, a series of messages are displayed, ensuring secure and reliable operations.
  • When a critical fault occurs on the device and the command line interface cannot be displayed, turn the power off and then on to restart the device. The current device configuration is not saved during the restart.

A restart can cause service interruptions and loss of unsaved configuration data. Before restarting the device, run the save command to save the configuration.

Turning the Power Off and On

Turn the power off and then on to restart the device. The process of restarting a device by power cycling the device is called a cold restart.

The position of the power switch on a power module differs in different product models. Some models have the power switch on the left of the front panel, and others have the power switch on the right of the rear panel. Some models have no power switch. Models without a power switch are powered on or off by plugging in or pulling out power cables.

Using Commands

To restart the device using commands, run the reboot command in the user view. The process of restarting a device using the reboot command is called a warm restart.

Warm restart is the simplest and most common restart method. After you remotely log in to the device, you can restart the device. During the restart, the system prompts you to save the configuration, preventing configuration data loss.

4.2  Upgrading the Device

The upgrade of a device is closely related to the released software versions. The corresponding upgrade guide is released with each new version and you can upgrade the device according to the guide. To obtain the upgrade guides, visit http://support.huawei.com/enterprise, and download the upgrade guide based on the product name and version.

Generally, the device is upgraded using commands or the BootROM menu. If the network management function is configured, the device can be upgraded using the network management system (NMS). This section only describes the procedure for upgrading the device using commands or the BootROM menu. To upgrade the device using the NMS, see the NMS operation guide.

Using Commands

Network administrators typically use commands for upgrade because this method simple, secure, and reliable. To upgrade the device using commands, do as follows:
  1. Upload the prepared system software to the device. The method of obtaining the system software is similar to that of obtaining the upgrade guide.

    The device supports uploading system software through FTP, TFTP, FTPS, SFTP, or SCP. Uploading the system software using FTP or TFTP is simple but poses security risks. In scenarios with high security requirements, you are advised to upload system software using FTPS, SFTP, or SCP. For details on FTP, TFTP, FTPS, SFTP, and SCP, see "File Management" in the Configuration Guide - Basic Configuration of the corresponding product version.

  2. Configure the uploaded system software as the next startup system software for the device. Assume that the system software devicesoft.cc is uploaded. Configure devicesoft.cc as the next startup software for the device.

    When the system software for next startup is configured, the system checks the system software integrity. If the digital signature of the system software is invalid, the configuration fails. Therefore, ensure the system software validity.

    In a stack, you also need to run the startup system-software system-file { slave-board | slot slot-id } command to specify the next startup system software for the slave switch.

  3. Restart the device to make the configured system software take effect.

  4. After the device restarts, the new version is used. You can run the display version command to check the device version.

Using the BootROM Menu to Upgrade the Device

When the device breaks down and cannot be upgraded using commands or the NMS, you can upgrade the device using the BootROM menu. The BootROM menu is provided by the device mainboard program. Unlike the system software of the device, the BootROM menu can still start even if the system software is damaged.

To upgrade the system software using the BootROM menu, do as follows:

  1. Configure an FTP server and place the prepared system software to the working path of the FTP server. To configure an FTP server, see "PC Functioning as an FTP Server" in 4.3 Transferring Files Using FTP/TFTP.
  2. Restart the device. When the following message is displayed, press Ctrl+B or Ctrl+E in V200R005 and enter the password to access the BootROM main menu. The default password for versions earlier than V100R006C03 is huawei, and the default password for V100R006C03 and later versions is Admin@huawei.com.

4.3  Transferring Files Using FTP/TFTP

During system maintenance, such as software upgrade and configuration file backup, files must be transferred between a PC and the device. FTP/TFTP is used to transfer files.

When transferring files using FTP/TFTP, the roles of a PC and the device vary based on the file transfer method:
  • PC functioning as an FTP server: You must install the FTP server software on your PC.
  • PC functioning as a TFTP server: You must install the TFTP server software on your PC. TFTP is easy to configure but this method has low security and transmission speed.
  • Device functioning as an FTP server: You can perform configurations on the device without installing any software. When there are a large number of devices on a network, the first two methods are recommended.

  1. Run the FTP server software on the FTP server and configure the FTP service.

    As shown in Figure 4-2, run an FTP server program, such as wftpd32, on the PC. Choose SecurityUsers/Rights. In the dialog box that is displayed, click New User.... In the dialog box that is displayed, set the user name to user and password to huawei. Set Home Directory: to D:\FTP. Click Done to close the dialog box. Set the IP address of the PC to 192.168.0.2 and mask to 255.255.255.0.

  2. Connect the device and the FTP server.

    1. Connect the FTP server to GE0/0/1 of the device using a network cable.
    2. Configure an IP address 192.168.0.1/24 for GE0/0/1.

    The direct connection mode is used as an example here. For an indirectly connected network, ensure that there are reachable routes between the server and client.

  3. Log in to the server (PC) from the device using FTP.

  1. Enable the PC to function as a TFTP server. Run the TFTP server program on the PC and set the working path to D:\tftpd32, as shown in Figure 4-4.

    The TFTP server program is not installed on PCs by default. Users must buy and install the TFTP server software separately. The TFTP32 program is recommended.

  2. Connect the TFTP server and the device and configure IP addresses for them. For details, see PC Functioning as an FTP Server.

  3. Run the tftp tftp-server put source-filename destination-filename ] command to upload a file to the TFTP server (PC) or run the tftp tftp-server get source-filename destination-filename ] command to download a file from the TFTP server to the device. Examples are as follows:
    • Upload the configuration file vrpcfg.zip to the TFTP server (PC) and save the file as vrpcfg1.zip.

  1. Connect the PC and the device and configure IP addresses for them. For details, see PC Functioning as an FTP Server.

  2. Enable FTP on the device, and create a user name, password, and FTP path.

  3. Log in to the device by running the ftp command on the FTP server. Run the get command to download files to the FTP server or run the put command to upload files from the FTP server to the device.
