There is a possibility that VMs using the default configuration Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.4 (32-bit and 64-bit) or CentOS 4.4 (32-bit and 64-bit) failed graceful shutdown, and artifacts occurred during the VNC connection, as shown in Figure 1.

Handling Process

Stop the power management service acpid of the system.
To stop the power management service acpid of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.4 (32-bit and 64-bit) or CentOS 4.4 (32-bit and 64-bit), perform the following steps:

1. On the Linux terminal, run the following command to stop the acpid service:
chkconfig acpid off

2. Restart the VM for the settings to take effect.

Root Cause

By default, the power management module of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.4 (32-bit and 64-bit) and CentOS 4.4 (32-bit and 64-bit) is loaded during the kernel startup. However, the module of a lower Linux Kernel version has defects, which cause the VM to possibly fail to shut down.
