EDFA Erbium Dopped Fiber Amplifier .
Are amplifiers amplify optical signal inside the board using fiber dopped with erbium material .
The erbium ions get estimulated with power to be in higher power level then these ions loss there power in benefit of the orginal signal .
RAMAN amplifier amplify the signal not inside the board but in the fiber along the line .there are forward raman and backward raman .
Forward sends pumb signal with the main signal in TX direction and the pumb signal losses its power to the main signal in about 10 to 15 km .
The back ward raman sends pumb signal with the main signal in RX direction and the pumb signal losses its power to the main signal in about 10 to 15 km .
Raman amplifiers is better as they dont cause loss in OSNR for the signal and their NF is lower than EDFA but they affect the life time of fiber and costs more.
EDFA is cheaper but costs less
