Hello, everyone!

This post will introduce the techniques of preventing rogue devices from accessing Huawei ONT's Wi-Fi. Please find more information on the topic as you read further down.

In our daily life or at work, we use Wi-Fi to access the Internet, but sometimes the network speed suddenly slows down. It is possible that a rogue device has connected to our ONT’s Wi-Fi. Therefore, we can take the following measures to prevent others from accessing it without permission via our Wi-Fi.

1. Operate carefully when using software to access the Wi-Fi without permission. Such software uploads a user's Wi-Fi network information without notification. Other users can also find the network name of this Wi-Fi, obtain its key from the software server via a 3G or 4G network, and access it without permission.

2. Check whether the encryption has been performed for the Wi-Fi network. Specifically, log in to the ONT web page. On the main menu, choose WLAN > 2.4G/5G Basic Network Settings. In WPA PreSharedKey, DO NOT select Hide.

3. Check whether the Wi-Fi password is too easy to guess. You are advised to set the Authentication Mode as WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK. Configure and record a password with a high-security level; for example, a password should contain digits, uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and special characters. This prevents password cracking.

4. By configuring MAC address filtering, you can allow only permitted devices (whitelist) to access the network and prevent rogue devices (blacklist) from accessing the network.

P.S. 1: This applies to the Huawei ONT’s with Wi-Fi functions (such as HG8045, HG8045A, HG8245, HG8245H, HG8245Q, HG8245T, HG8247, and HG8247H).

P.S. 2: In the case of some ONT’s, you can configure a Wi-Fi password after choosing Advanced Configuration > WLAN > 2.4G/5G Basic Network Settings on the ONT web page.

Thanks.
