Point-to-Point Protocol Over Ethernet (PPPoE) is a network tunneling protocol that encapsulates Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) in the Ethernet framework. Because the protocol integrates the PPP protocol, functions such as identity authentication, encryption, and compression that cannot be provided by the traditional Ethernet are implemented. The protocol system may also be used to provide an access service for a user by using an Ethernet protocol, such as a cable modem (cable modem) and a digital subscriber line (DSL).
PPPoE (Ethernet Point-to-Point Protocol) protocol is a technology for encapsulating PPP frames in Ethernet frames. PPPoE uses a client/server model, eNodeB base station is a PPPoE client, and BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server) is a PPPoE server.

Definition:
PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) is a link layer protocol that encapsulates Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) frames into Ethernet frames. PPPoE enables multiple hosts on an Ethernet to connect to a broadband remote access server (BRAS).

PPPoE Typical Networking:

PPPoE uses the client/server model. A PPPoE client sends a connection request to the PPPoE server, and the PPPoE server provides access control and authentication functions for the PPPoE client.

Device Functioning as a PPPoE Client:

As shown in Figure 4-1, Router A functions as a PPPoE client and connects to users on the downstream LAN. Router B is a carrier's device. All hosts in the LAN do not have the PPPoE client dial-up software installed, share the same account, and establish PPPoE sessions with Router B through Router A.
