Today, I will continue to write about the PON system overview. Now, I will write about ONT (Optical Network Terminal). This is the last article about this topic.
As I said in the last article, ONT is an ONU device with a small number of interfaces. ONT can have different interfaces for different services. It can be used in FTTH, FTTO and POL. Nowadays, there are many different models of ONTs: HG8010H, HG8012H, HG8245H, HG8546H, HG8247H, HG8247H5, EG8247A5, EG8247Q, etc. In the next figure, we can see examples of ONTs with short features.

ONTs can be divided into two major groups: bridging ONTs and gateway ONTs.
The bridging ONT has no routing, the device forwards the IP address to the device connected to it (PC, router, etc.). It transparently emits the packets. These ONT devices do not have WiFi capability, so subscribers are used in combination with a wireless router. In this group, there are HG/EG 8010H (1 GE port), HG8012H (1 GE port and 1 RF port), etc.
The gateway ONT is the most popular for subscribers. It has a router or wireless router. It is usually used without additional devices but can be used in combination with mini nodes or wireless routers. There are many different models, such as HG8247H (4GE ports, 2 POTS, 1 RF and WiFi 2.4GHz), HG8247 (4 GE ports, 2 POTS, 1 RF and WiFi 2.4 GHz), EG8143A5 (1 GE+3 FE ports, 1 POT, 1 RF and WiFi 2.4 GHz), HG8546H, (1 GE+3 FE ports, 1 POTS and WiFi 2.4GHz), EG8247Q (4 GE ports, 2 POTS and WiFi 2.4GHz and 5 GHz), EG8247W (4 GE ports, 2 POTS, 1 RF and WiFi 2.4GHz and 5 GHz).
There are ONTs that support GPON and ONTs that support XG-PON and XGS-PON. Today's modern ONTs, usually have 4 GE ports and support WiFi 6, such as OptiXstar W626E, OptiXstar W826E, OptiXstar K562, etc.
To provide video surveillance, in the POL scenario, special ONT devices are used. An example is T672E. These devices are for outdoor applications, with one optical port and 4 GE ethernet ports. It provides IP55 protection, has a local power supply, or supports PoE. Operation temperature is from - 40 to + 55 C. We can see this example in the next figure.
