Hi!

We all know the importance of Cloud Computing and its continued usage evolution, but do we know about FOG and Edge computing?

Cloud Computing has solved a lot of issues in the traditional client-server model, but there is an issue with the sensitive applications that need immediate response. Especially in the IOT (internet of things) environment, because of the big amount of data that is generated from the IoT devices that are connected to the internet (Big Dta) which need analysis and processing for an immediate response to take an action.

In the Cloud model, to send a large amount of data through the Cloud via the internet to be processed and analyzed will cause a delay that maybe is not acceptable for the sensitive applications in the IOT environment when almost all devices will be connected to the internet and actions will be taken due to the analysis and processing for the data generated from these devices.

For example:

If I had a jet engine in a plane work for 30 minutes, this will generate 10 terabytes of data about the performance and condition of the engine. Just imagine if you need to deliver this data through the internet to the Cloud in order to be processed and analyzed to take an action which may need to be taken immediately to avoid a problem like an engine failure.

Fog computing is the solution to a problem like this which will give us the availability to have part of the processing and analysis for a large amount of data locally on the edge devices but the Edge devices must support the fog computing and can do this task because the normal edge devices don't have compute and storage resources to do advanced analytic and machine-learning tasks that were being done in the Cloud.

FOG computing has solved a lot of issues and has distributed the computing infrastructure between the network Edge and Cloud, instead depending only on the Cloud. That’s why it is called FOG, which means 'Cloud close to the ground'.

FOG computing has enabled us to take fast actions and decrease the delay and BW through the Cloud used by the generated data from the Sensors/Devices and also has increased the resiliency, because if the connection to the internet to the Cloud is lost, the IoT devices can continue working depending on the FOG-enabled Edge devices. Also, FOG computing increases the security, because the analysis and computing for sensitive data will be on the local network and there is no need to share this data to the Cloud.

Notes:

  • FOG computing is not a substitution for Cloud computing, but both complete each other;

  • there is an organization called OpenFogConsortium established in 2015. This organization aims to develop open-reference architecture to increase the business value of the FOG computing:

https://www.openfogconsortium.org/about-us/

FOG computing is different than Edge computing, however they have the same concept, which is making the intelligence and processing near the generated data. The difference between them is will be the intelligence and processing.

In FOG computing, the intelligence and processing will be in the local area network and the devices that generate the data will send it to thecapable edge devices (such as routers) for analysis and will receive the decision.

In Edge computing, the intelligence and processing will be in the device itself, such as the programmable automation controllers.

The benefit of Edge computing is that there is no single point of failure, as every device is dependent. However, the benefit of FOG computing is that it is more stable and provides a bigger picture about the network, leading to better decisions and actions.
