Performance data implements built-in and real-time monitoring for the quality of transmit signals. Performance statistics helps network management personnel to evaluate, analyze, and predict equipment running status and provides real-time monitoring based on managed objects. The performance data of WDM equipment includes the monitoring and statistics data of bit error performance at each layer. Table 1-2 describes performance statistics purposes.
Table 1-2 Performance statistics purposes
Performance Statistics | Purpose |
Fault monitoring | To detect damaged signals and reflect the signal receiving quality in real time. |
Fault isolation | To find out the fault cause and provide the reference for fault diagnosis. |
Service quality evaluation | To evaluate the signal transmission quality of the transmission system. |
Project & design evaluation | To evaluate the system transmission capability and provide the reference for network design and construction, and evaluation of network construction. |
Performance statistics is implemented by the NE performance module and board performance module. The following table describes the functions of the two modules.
| Function |
NE performance module | 1. Manages historical performance data of boards and saves the searched historical performance data in the historical performance register. |
Board performance module | 1. Searches for performance primitives reported by application modules and converts the performance primitives into performance events. 2. Saves the performance events in the current performance register. 3. Reports performance data to the NE performance module at the end of each measurement period. |
Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-2 respectively describe the process of collecting statistics on performance of WDM equipment and the structure of the performance module.

Figure 1-2 Structure of the performance module

The performance module supports the following functions:
1. Collects performance primitives.
2. Calculates performance events.
3. Manages performance data.
4. Manages performance thresholds.
5. Generates performance data reports (including the current and historical performance).
A performance module monitors the performance of transmit signals from different scopes and layers. The performance module of WDM equipment monitors the performance of SDH and WDM equipment.
Performance primitives function as the basis of performance statistics and include defects and bit errors.
