peer ebgp-max-hop

If we have two routers directly connected but BGP peering is configured through loopback ip address then 

why the peer ebgp-max-hop command must be configured?, is default TTL is 1 & directly connected Routers.

In short:
By default, an EBGP connection can be set up only on a directly-connected physical link.
The peer EBGP-max-hop command cancels the check on the same network segment.
