Packet Loss Caused by the STP Mode mismatch between the C Switch and Huawei Switch


Live network topology

Symptom:

The customer purchases four Huawei switches and needs to connect to the live network for service provisioning. A switch of Cis is deployed on the live network, and the topology is established according to the preceding figure. Connect the PC to the HW SW3. Ping the gateway of the Cis.. SW from the PC. It is found that the ping packets are interrupted intermittently.


Troubleshooting procedure:

Configure the VLANIF interface and IP address on the four Huawei switches. Ping the Huawei switch from the PC. It is found that the ping test result is also intermittent. Check the switch logs and find that a large number of ARP packets are updated.

Check the status of the interface on the spanning tree. It is found that the status of the downstream interface is unstable.The status of the interface is changed between discarding and forwarding status. By default, the PVST mode is used for the Cis.. switch by default. The default spanning tree mode of Huawei is MSTP. It is determined that packet loss occurs because the spanning tree mode does not match.


There are two solutions: Disable the spanning tree protocol on the interface connected to the Cis.. switch but need to ensure that no Layer 2 loop exists. The second is to change the spanning tree mode of Huawei switches to VBST, which is compatible with the PVST mode of Cis...


To configure VBST on Huawei switches, perform the following steps:

  1. Set the spanning tree mode to VBST and enable the spanning tree.
