In LTE, the Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) layer is responsible for
- Header compression and decompression
- Security aspects (i.e., ciphering and deciphering of UP and CP data, integrity protection and integrityverification of CP data)
- Maintenance of PDCP sequence numbers (SNs), detection and discarding of duplicates and timer‐based discard
- Routing and reordering of PDCP PDUs in the case of split bearers
- Data‐recovery procedure for split bearers in DC, for instance needed when part of the data transmitted over one radio leg is lost due to bad radio conditions
- Retransmission of PDCP service data units (SDUs) in the context of handover.
- Complete PDCP PDUs
- Despite proposals to link the SNs in RLC and PDCP
- For URLLC services, packet duplication is supported for both UP and CP in PDCP for increased reliability and handover robustness.
