INTRODUCTION


Do you think a single pair of fiber can carry the signals of several systems in their pure form simultaneously? The answer was 'impossible' up until recently, but now with P-OTN the answer changes positively to 'yes'.


P-OTN is an acronym for Packet Optical Transport Network. It has been mainly developed for OTN.

 

PACKETS AND TDM


The packet is now used as a base signal for most of the technologies. That is because of its resilience and large granularity, starting from 64kb/s reaching up to 1Tb/s; that is, besides its strong protection mechanism depending on routing protocols capable of depicting the topology and instant rerouting.


TDM was up until recently the main signal form for all technologies. The SDH dominated the transmission networks for over 15 years; that was, mainly because of its unique features like the definite capacity and accurate timing.


However, in order to unify network resources, the telecom community moved to packets and invented a new technology to carry TDM over Packet - PWE3 (pseudowire emulation edge to edge). This way for TDM transferring is really effective, but has its shortcomings in terms of timing in a long series of equipment. That raised a question about the need for pure services instead of conversion.


THE URGENT NEED FOR OTN


The huge demand for high bandwidth with the least available delay imposed the use of fiber end to end using a system that can minimize the delay and optimize capacity.


The OTN started to dominate the optical core network, with its diversity of services and ability to optimize the DWDM network. OTN is a protocol that has its own Frame ODUk to carry all kinds of services, while also having its own Multiplexing scheme and protection. Given the OTN benefits, it deprived the networks of the pure TDM & Ethernet signal between NEs.

P-OTN ALL TOGETHER


P-OTN provided the system that can collect TDM, Packet and OTN all together in one equipment in order to support the ability to transfer theses services either over OTN or in pure form. That provides a very important factor for rising networks:


  • performance - the transmission of the TDM over SDH in pure form guarantees the quality of the timing and capacity;


  • protection - the P-OTN allows the utilization of SDH, Ethernet and OTN protection schemes;


  • cost - the P-OTN saves the utilization of hardware through the utilization of a single equipment to support the services instead of using several equipment piecces, which also saves power, space and fibers.



CROSS CONNECT AND UNIVERSAL LINE BOARDS

The capability to tackle the processing and sending of several services simultaneously needs robust cross-connect that works as 3-in-1. At the same time, it should support the matrixing in levels of TDM (VC12, VC3, VC4), packet (FE, 1GE, 10GE, 40GE, 100GE, 400GE,..) and also OTN (ODU0,1,2,3,4 / ODUe /ODUFlex).


Universal line boards

The line board that can send pure TDM, pure Ethernet and OTN services at the same time is called a Universal Line board. These boards physically send these services over the OTN (OTU) frame, but the system uses the benefits of virtualization to fulfill the separation of the line into several line boards.


The user should identify a virtual port into the universal line board to map TDM or Ethernet services into them, the P-OTN  supports the using of protection of TDM , Ethernet and OTN at the same time rising the availability and survivability to the maximum.
